 March 2003
I started my trip to Melbourne, Austraila, at 10am on March 3 and arrived almost two days later in Melbourne. I immediately walked down to the Yarra River, where the tournament is held, to check out the site. This was my first trip to Australia so everything was exciting. The next day my Mother and I drove to a city nearby called Geelong to get a practice ride in at one of the local ski clubs. My practice set went well and I felt very confident coming into the big tournament for the first time. Friday morning came quickly and I found myself pulling out for my gates on the bumpy river water. The river has a current, is part salt water (brakish), and has a tide. This made it a new experience for me. I felt good after my first pass (28 off) and was ready for the next as I waited patiently at the other end for the water to calm. I pulled out, nice early gate, around one, around two and boom I was down. I remember putting my hands on my face asking God “Why now?” I had been training so hard every weekend and had still a positive experience. I spent time with ski friends and met many new wonderful people! Although my skiing was an extreme disappointment in Australia, I have many more tournaments to come in my life-time! I will be back stronger and more ready that ever for the next one though
